How We Lay Our

with

Lothian Monoblocks usually arrives on site with a mini excavator. A skip will normally arrive soon afterwards. The excavator is
used to strip the site down to suitable load-bearing ground. Hardcore is then spread and compacted with a vibrating plate, usually
to a minimum depth of 150mm (around 6") to form the new base for the driveway.
This is followed by a bed of Granitsand, approximately 50mm (2") thick, which is also compacted with the vibrating plate. The
use of Granitsand
is relatively new for this kind of work. It is more expensive than sharp sand but sets much harder  when
compacted, for a longer-lasting driveway.
The sand is then screeded (held in place with wooden shuttering) before the customer's choice of block paving is laid upon it. At
this stage, other items such as recessed manhole covers, drainage systems or radius steps are installed, if required, along with
the customer's choice of edging materials
.
The whole drive is then covered with kiln dried sand, which is brushed into the joints, before a final pass with the vibrating plate.
This levels the blocks and vibrates the sand down into the joints. The driveway is then swept and will be ready to use 24 hours later.
Only when the client is happy with the works carried out by Lothian Monoblocks do they settle their account. We then get the
client to sign a form to apply for the Marshalls 10-year guarantee. This will come direct from Marshalls.
